Goals and measures
The story you want to be able to tell, made measurable, then broken into steps.
The story you want to tell
Not a goal yet. The thing you want to be able to say, out loud, to someone who knows you. Write both, because the one year story is usually a step inside the five year one, and if it is not, one of them is wrong.
What makes those stories measurable
A story you cannot measure is a wish you will renegotiate quietly. For each one, what would have to be true for you to know it actually happened? Numbers where there are numbers, and something specific and observable where there are not.
The measurable steps
Now work backwards. What has to be hit this week, this quarter, this year and in three years for those stories to land, and what support will you need for each one. Add a date only where a real deadline exists.
Carry this forward
Your development plan works far better when it can see these goals. Copy this link and paste it into the development plan, or keep it to come back to these answers on another device.
Take it with you
Everything you have filled in across the check-in, your goals, the development plan and the weekly check-ins, gathered into one branded page. Save it as a PDF, print it, or send it to yourself. It is built in your browser, so nothing is uploaded anywhere.
This is the page worth talking through with someone.
A plan written alone tends to be either too safe or too big. Half an hour with someone who has done it is usually the difference between a plan you follow and one you feel guilty about. The first call is free.
Everything stays in your browser. The copy button puts it on your clipboard so you can bring it to the call, or keep it somewhere.
